Zero-click search is a search that ends without a visit to any website because the results page or an AI assistant answered the question first. For B2B marketing teams in 2026, organic traffic can fall while your brand still shapes the shortlist. The absence of a click no longer proves the content failed.

Take a security buyer who searches "what is SASE". Google shows an AI Overview, and in an Ahrefs sample pulled September 22, 2026, an estimated 77% of those searches ended without a click. That buyer learned something, and your analytics recorded nothing.

Key Takeaways

  • Clicks undercount influence: A buyer can read your definition inside an answer, remember the vendor behind it, and never visit the site that supplied it.
  • Security and compliance definitions lose the most clicks: in a 20-query Ahrefs sample, four of the five most click-poor queries were "what is SASE", "what is EDR", "what is KYC", and "what is AML", with modeled no-click shares of 63% to 77%.
  • Buyers ask AI first: 94% of business buyers use AI in their buying process, according to Forrester research published in January 2026.
  • Some traffic loss is still an SEO problem: if your rankings fell along with your clicks, zero-click search is the wrong explanation, and your own Search Console data will show it.
  • Report presence beside sessions, never a pipeline share: influence that produces no visit cannot be counted, so a percentage of pipeline built on it is a guess.

What Is Zero-Click Search, and Why Is It Accelerating?

The plain answer to what is zero-click search: a query that ends on the results page or inside an assistant. The answer arrives before the visit: An AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a chat reply gives the searcher enough, so no click follows. Voice assistants are the extreme case, because a spoken reply usually offers nothing to click.

At category level, the scale is clear: in the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click to anywhere, according to SparkToro's 2026 zero-click study of Similarweb's desktop and mobile web panel. That panel excludes the Google Search app, so treat the figure as a category signal rather than your number.

Why "Accelerating" Holds Up

The search side: SparkToro compares its 2026 figure with its 2024 study and calls the rise the fastest acceleration of zero-click behavior in a decade. It also warns that the two years come from different clickstream panels, so the comparison is directional.

The buyer side: Forrester reported that 89% of business buyers used AI in their buying process a year earlier, rising to 94% in its latest survey. The tools are adjusting too. HubSpot's new AI referrals signal treats AI referrals as a traffic source of their own.

What the B2B Sample Shows

Method: Ahrefs Keywords Explorer, United States, pulled September 22, 2026. The sample covers twenty B2B "what is" queries across security, fintech, data, sales, and marketing. No-click share is 100% minus Ahrefs' three click shares: organic only, organic and paid, and paid only.

The headline: all 20 results pages showed an AI Overview on Ahrefs' stored snapshot, dated between August 4 and September 21, 2026. Ahrefs returned click data for 13 of the 20, and none for the other seven. Median no-click share across the 13 was 54%, and nine of the 13 sat at or above 50%.

what is a payment gateway38%1.09
what is an api gateway34%1.01
what is customer success29%0.86
what is account based marketing29%1.01

Read it as a sample, not a benchmark. Ahrefs click figures are modeled estimates from clickstream data, not numbers Google reports. Twenty queries on one date cannot show a trend.

An overview on the page is not proof it took the click. The flag means one appeared on the stored snapshot. Google publishes no way to attribute a lost click to one of Google's AI Overviews, so any tool that offers one has modeled it. Your own Search Console data settles it for your queries.

How Zero-Click Search Changes the B2B Buyer Journey

Forrester's evidence is specific to business buyers. Its January 2026 blog, B2B Buyers Make Zero-Click Number One, reports three findings about business buyers:

  • Near-universal use: 94% of business buyers report using AI in their buying process.
  • AI outranks vendors as a source: in Forrester's Buyers' Journey Survey, 2025, twice as many buyers named generative AI or conversational search as a more meaningful source of information than any other, "far outpacing vendor websites, product experts, and sales."
  • Private tools: 61% of business buyers use private AI tools their organization provides. Forrester adds that more than half of ChatGPT and Copilot users among them run private versions behind the company firewall.

Where the Shortlist Forms Now

The shortlist forms inside an answer the vendor never sees. Picture a CISO's team evaluating secure access. An analyst asks an internal assistant what SASE covers and which vendors fit a hybrid workforce, then brings three names to the first meeting.

Your analytics sees none of that research. The assistant sits behind the buyer's firewall, and it passes no query to you. The first recorded touch may be a branded search or a demo request, weeks after the decision started taking shape.

Forrester's own heading names the consequence: "Marketers Need To Shift From Driving Traffic To Driving Visibility." The job moves upstream, to being the source an answer draws on when your buyer asks the question.

Zero-Click Search vs. Traditional SEO: What Still Works

Most zero-click SEO 2026 advice starts from the wrong metric. Ranking still matters, because Google's guide to its generative AI features says they are rooted in the core Search ranking systems and retrieve pages from the Search index. A page that ranks is eligible to be used in an answer, which is why so many signals do double duty across both disciplines.

What changed is the value of each ranking. In the sample above, searchers for "what is account based marketing" clicked about once per search on average. Searchers for "what is SASE" clicked 0.21 times. The same position earns different traffic depending on which query you hold.

The implication for a security or fintech brand is uncomfortable. Your most important definitional queries are the most click-poor in the sample. Winning them still matters, for presence in the answer, but they will not refill a traffic chart.

Rankings Held or Rankings Fell

Some traffic declines are ordinary ranking losses, and blaming zero-click search for them hides a fixable problem. Open Search Console before you explain anything upward, and compare position, impressions, and clicks for the same queries over the same period.

What you see in Search ConsoleWhat it may meanWhat to do
Rankings held, clicks fellPossible zero-click absorption or a SERP changeCheck the live results and report presence alongside sessions
Rankings and clicks fell togetherAn SEO problemFix the ranking loss first
Impressions rose, clicks stayed flatVisibility rose without proportional trafficCheck the query and position mix before drawing a conclusion

The first row is the pattern worth investigating for zero-click absorption. The second is an SEO problem, and no change of metric will fix it.

How to Measure Success When Clicks Aren't the Metric

Stop using sessions as the single test of content. Keep them, and add three signals a leadership team can read without a new attribution model.

  1. Presence in answers: how often AI engines mention and cite your brand for the questions

your buyers ask. The metrics worth tracking there are leading indicators, not pipeline. 2. Branded demand and impressions: branded search volume, plus Search Console impressions, including the Generative AI performance report, which Google rolled out to all websites on August 31, 2026. It counts impressions only, across AI Overviews and AI Mode combined, with no split between the two. 3. Self-reported attribution: a "how did you hear about us" field with AI assistants named as an option, which is the most direct way a buyer can tell you an answer sent them.

Some influence will never be attributable. An answer that names you and sends nobody leaves no event and no row to count, which is what you genuinely cannot attribute with any analytics setup. Never report it as a share of pipeline. The denominator includes influence nobody can observe.

Building a Content Strategy for a Zero-Click World

Optimizing for zero-click answers means judging each page by one question: is it the source an answer uses? A page built to be quoted needs different things from a page built to be visited.

  • Name the entity and the claim together: "Acme's gateway supports SCIM provisioning" still works when an engine lifts it out of context. "Our gateway supports it" does not.
  • Publish the facts buyers compare: integrations, compliance scope, deployment options, and data residency, stated on your own pages in plain sentences.
  • Earn third-party corroboration: Reviews, analyst coverage, and community discussion carry weight because they provide independent sources models can learn from and retrieve.
  • Accept that some pages exist to be quoted: a strong SASE definition may send few visits and still put your name in front of every evaluating team.

Structure is part of the work. Clear headings, direct first sentences, and one idea per paragraph are what writing so machines can consume it looks like in practice.

What This Means for Your AEO Priorities Going Forward

A zero-click search strategy comes down to three decisions a CMO can make this quarter. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the name for this work: earning a place in the answers that search engines and AI assistants give, not only in the links below them. Answer engine optimization grew out of featured-snippet work and now covers generated answers as well.

  1. Change the scorecard: report presence, branded demand, and stated source alongside

sessions, using the three signals above. 2. Split your queries by click value: protect the ones that still send traffic, such as comparison and integration queries, and cover the click-poor definitions for presence. 3. Invest where answers source from: your own factual pages first, then the third-party sites engines draw on in your category.

Teams running this in-house can follow a dated ninety-day plan that assigns owners and sign-off gates to each phase.

What Klarivo Measures When the Click Never Comes

Once clicks stop showing influence, presence in answers is the thing to watch. A buyer who reads your definition in an assistant and books a demo weeks later leaves one visible trace, and it arrives at the end.

Klarivo Monitor tracks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok, each provider tracked independently. It reports visibility scores, competitor share of voice, sentiment trends, and the top citation sources as domains, updated on a schedule you control. Monitor measures presence in answers and sits beside your demand-side attribution rather than replacing it. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode fall outside its five engines, and the Search Console report above covers those.

Together, the two readings show you both halves: whether engines name you, and whether buyers arrive. Klarivo Monitor supplies the first. Book a Klarivo discovery call. The call takes 15 minutes, and you choose the time.

FAQ

Is zero-click search bad for B2B companies?

Not by itself. A buyer who reads an accurate answer that names you has formed a preference without a visit, and in Forrester's survey, generative AI far outpaced vendor websites as the source buyers found most meaningful. It becomes a problem when the answer names a competitor, or when the business judges content only by traffic.

Does ranking first still matter if nobody clicks?

Yes. Google's generative features draw on the Search index, so a page that ranks is eligible to be used in an answer. The ranking now earns presence as well as visits.

Which B2B queries lose the most clicks?

In a 20-query Ahrefs sample pulled September 22, 2026, security and compliance definitions such as SASE, EDR, KYC, and AML were among the most click-poor, with modeled no-click shares of 63% to 77%. Account-based marketing and customer success had the lowest no-click shares, at 29% each. It is a small, modeled sample, so check your own queries before acting on it.

How do I explain falling organic traffic to a CEO?

Start with the diagnostic: if rankings held while clicks fell, say so and show the Search Console data. Then report presence in answers beside sessions. Leave pipeline share out of it, because the influence behind it cannot be counted.

Can I stop Google from answering my query without a click?

Not in the way you want. Google documents nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, and noindex as the controls that limit what Search shows from your pages, and Search Console lets you exclude a site from its generative AI features. Each one limits what appears without turning an answer back into a click, so for most B2B pages, being the quoted source is worth more.
