Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your facts into the passages an answer engine selects, quotes, and repeats. You could never mark a page as a featured snippet and you still cannot mark one as an answer, which is why the job sits on the sources rather than on the markup.

Google's featured-snippet documentation was last updated on 10 December 2025 and read live on 31 August 2026. It answers the request in two words. Asked "How can I mark my page as a featured snippet?", the page says: "You can't." Google systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet, and elevate it.

The only markup Google still documents for spoken answers tells the same story from the other end. Speakable structured data is still labeled BETA. Read on the same day, it still limits itself to publishers writing in English, for users in the U.S., on Google Home devices.

Two properties defined the snippet era. You could block participation but never nominate yourself. And the system selected a passage rather than a page. That asymmetry carried into generated answers: operators may let you close the door, but none lets you pick the passage. What changed is the number of surfaces, the controls available on each one, and the fact that the answer no longer has to link to you.

Key Takeaways

  • Selection, not submission: none of the operators reviewed here publishes a way to nominate your page as the answer, and Google states this outright for featured snippets.
  • Opt-out is real, opt-in is not: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and a low max-snippet value give you control in one direction only. That asymmetry is the oldest fact in this discipline.
  • Contrarian: most of what a good featured-snippet program taught still works. Teams being told to start from scratch are being sold a rebuild they do not need.
  • The click is what broke: clicking a featured snippet scrolls the reader to your passage. A generated answer carries no such guarantee, so the visit that used to prove the work may never arrive.
  • The work moved beyond your domain: when you cannot mark yourself as the answer, your own page is only one lever. What the other sources an engine reads say about you becomes the next one.

What Answer Engine Optimization Is

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making the sources an engine reads carry accurate, attributable facts about you. The goal is an answer that gets the facts right and names you. The plainest version of what is answer engine optimization: it targets a selection step rather than a ranking step.

That distinction does real work. Ranking asks which page belongs at position three. Selection asks which sentence answers the question. The sentence may come from a page nobody clicked, on a domain you do not own.

The unit of success is a passage, not a URL. Google describes snippets as created automatically from page content. They are designed to preview the part of a page that best relates to a specific search. The same page can therefore yield different snippets for different queries, which is why page-level thinking misses.

Search volume for the shorthand runs high, and AEO meaning is where most of it lands. The honest answer is one line. AEO is the acronym, the phrase is answer engine optimization, and both name a target rather than a technique.

What an Answer Engine Is, and Which Ones Count

An answer engine reads sources and returns a direct answer instead of making the reader choose from links alone. It may still show links around that answer. The answer is the defining feature. Ten blue links on their own are not an answer engine, no matter how good the descriptions are.

People searching AEO answer engine optimization are usually checking that the acronym and the spelled-out phrase mean the same thing. They do. The doubled phrasing is a sign the discipline is still being named rather than practiced.

PerplexityPerplexityA composed answer with numbered sourcesNone published
ClaudeAnthropicA composed answer, sources shown when it searchesNone published
GeminiGoogleA composed answer inside Google surfaces and the appNone published
GrokxaiA composed answer drawing on live posts and the webNone published

Read the last column down. None of these operators publishes a mechanism for nominating your own page. The oldest of them says so in plain English. That single absence is why answer engine optimization is a source-side discipline, and why a markup-first plan stalls.

Separate permission from nomination before you read that column as nothing to do. Several operators document how to be eligible. Openai tells site owners to allow Oai-SearchBot in robots.txt so a site can appear in ChatGPT's search answers, and Google's snippet rules do the equivalent job in reverse. Every one of those controls governs access, not selection. You can open the door or close it. You cannot pick the passage.

Which ones count depends on where your buyers ask. A B2B category with a technical audience gets different coverage from a consumer one. The list above is the practical set. Check yours rather than assume it.

From Featured Snippets to Generated Answers

Google describes featured snippets as boxes where the format of a regular search result is reversed. They can also appear inside a related questions group. The box was the first surface that answered instead of listing. Generated answers take the same idea further, synthesizing passages from several sources instead of quoting one excerpt.

Search logs carry answer engine optimization AEO as its own query string. Readers are mapping a new label onto familiar work. Most of them map it correctly. The mechanics of how models choose what to cite rhyme closely with how the snippet box picked its passage.

PropertyFeatured snippetGenerated answer
Selected unitA passage from one pageSentences assembled from several sources

Opt-outnosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippetVaries, and no single documented control
Opt-inNoneNone
RepeatabilityThe same query tends to return the same boxThe same query can return a different answer

Only one row is unchanged: there is still no opt-in. Attribution, click behavior, repeatability, source count, and opt-out controls all moved. Most of the writing craft survived. The reporting model did not.

Which Snippet-Era Techniques Carried Over

Most of a competent snippet program transfers. These four carried over because they were never really about Google's box. They were about writing a passage a machine could lift without losing its meaning.

  • Self-contained passages: A paragraph that answers the question without the two paragraphs above it. Google generates snippets from page content. A passage that depends on context cannot be lifted cleanly by anything, old surface or new.
  • Question-shaped headings: Featured snippets can appear inside a related questions group. Matching the question a reader actually asks still gives the page a clear, self-contained target. Generated answers can use the same shape, although no provider publishes question-shaped headings as a selection factor.
  • Visible text over hidden text: Google's "Read more" deep-link guidance asks that content be immediately visible to a human. Not hidden behind an expandable section or a tabbed interface. For Google’s “Read more” deep links, an accordion is a self-inflicted wound. The documentation has said so for years.
  • Access as a floor: A page an engine cannot reach is invisible to every system downstream of the crawler. The specifics of which signals do double duty are worked through separately.

Keep the muscle memory. A team that wrote extractable answers for eight years is closer to competent at this than a team hiring for it fresh. The skill was never obsolete. The scoreboard around it was.

Which Ones Stopped Working, and Why

Four habits stopped paying. Each failed for a specific, documentable reason, rather than a general sense that everything changed.

  • Position zero as a KPI. One box on one engine was a fair proxy when there was one answer surface. There are several now. They disagree with each other on the same query, so a single number hides more than it reports.
  • Voice-search markup as a growth tactic. Speakable is the only markup Google still documents for text-to-speech readout. It remains BETA, English-only, U.S.-only, Google Home only, and scoped to topical news queries. It was never a general-purpose lever and it never became one.
  • Length-hacking to a target word count. The documentation is explicit. Google does not provide an exact minimum length required to appear as a featured snippet, because the minimum varies with the information, the language, and the platform. A published "optimal snippet length" is therefore somebody's sample, not a threshold Google has stated.
  • Winning the box and counting the click. Clicking a featured snippet takes the reader directly to the section that appeared in it, or to the top of the page where the browser cannot support the jump. Either way it was a visit. A generated answer owes you no link, so the arrival that used to prove the work may never happen, and the dashboard reads that absence as a decline.

Three of those four were measurement habits, not writing habits. The craft survived. The scoreboard did not, and replacing the scoreboard is most of the transition work.

What Answer Engine Optimization Looks Like Today

Asked plainly: how does answer engine optimization work, once you accept that no page can nominate itself? It works through three activities. The category is defined by all three being present, and a program missing one is doing something narrower.

  • Observation. Establishing what the engines currently say about you, and which sources they drew on to say it. Without this the other two are guesswork.
  • Source work. Getting accurate facts into the independent pages, threads, and profiles an engine already reads. Your own site can state the claim. Independent sources decide whether the rest of the web corroborates it.
  • Extractability. Keeping your own pages structured so a passage can be lifted without losing its meaning. This is the snippet-era skill, unchanged.

That is the shape of the category, not a scope of work. A vendor turns those three into a calendar and a price. That is a separate question from what the discipline consists of, and worth keeping separate when you evaluate one.

Three adjacent questions have their own answers elsewhere. How the deliverables are paced covers what actually lands in each month. Where monitoring stops short covers the gap between a dashboard and a delivery team. And a dated ninety-day plan covers sequencing for a team running this in-house.

Worked Examples of Content That Gets Answered With

The answer engine optimization examples below use two categories with clean factual answers. Professional services, where the answer is a rule. And hardware, where the answer is a specification. Both produce passages an engine can lift without editorializing.

Query a reader typesWhat the passage must containWhy an engine can lift it
"how much notice for redundancy in the UK"The statutory minimum, the service band it applies to, and the date checkedA rule with named bounds survives being quoted out of context
"can a contractor claim unfair dismissal"The distinction, the test applied, and the exceptionA stated exception stops the answer overgeneralizing
"poe budget on a 48 port switch"The wattage, the port count, and the model it applies toNumbers attached to a named model cannot be read as generic advice
"operating temperature range" for a named modelThe range, the units, and the enclosure it assumesA bounded figure needs no surrounding paragraph to make sense

Example one, an employment law firm. A page that opens "Redundancy notice periods depend on several factors" gives an engine nothing to select. Rewrite it to open with the statutory minimum, name the service bands it applies to, and state when the figure was checked. The second version answers. The first version introduces.

Example two, the same firm on a harder question. Contractor status has no single rule, so the temptation is to hedge across four paragraphs. A hedge is not a passage. Lead with the distinction, name the test that decides it, and state the exception in the same paragraph. The nuance stays and the passage becomes liftable.

Example three, a network hardware vendor. Specification pages already contain the answer, and they usually bury it in a table with no sentence around it. A one-line summary above the table, naming the model and the number, is often the entire fix. The table stays for the buyer. The sentence becomes the passage.

The pattern holds across all three. The answer sits in the first sentence. It carries its own bounds. And it names the thing it applies to. That was true of featured snippets in 2016 and it is true now.

How Klarivo Delivers AEO

The techniques changed less than the reporting did. The conclusion is uncomfortable for anyone who built a program entirely on their own domain. If you cannot mark yourself as the answer, the work cannot stop on your own domain. The next lever is what the other sources an engine reads already say about you. That is the work Klarivo takes on.

Klarivo Monitor tracks five engines independently: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok. It reports the domains those engines drew on. Visibility, sentiment, and competitor share of voice sit beside them. Reddit Acceleration Services works the other half. It puts human, contextual contributions into the communities those engines read and cite. The measurement names the sources. The service changes what they say.

Both halves answer the question this article has been circling since the first quotation. See how the program runs end to end, or what the monitoring reports. Book a Klarivo discovery call. Fifteen minutes, a slot you choose, and instant confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Answer Engine Optimization

Do featured snippets still exist, or did generated answers replace them?

They still exist. Google maintains the documentation, last updated 10 December 2025. The page still describes snippets appearing in results and inside a related questions group. Treat generated answers as an addition, not a replacement. Expect the same query to behave differently across the two, and report them separately.

Can I stop an answer engine from using my content?

For Google, yes, but the control depends on the surface. For featured and regular snippets, Google documents three controls and one precedence rule:

  • nosnippet blocks all snippets for a page, featured and regular.
  • data-nosnippet keeps marked passages out of both featured and regular snippets.
  • A lower max-snippet value makes a featured snippet less likely, with no guarantee.
  • Where nosnippet and data-nosnippet both appear, nosnippet takes priority.

For AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover, Google now provides a separate Search generative ai control in Search Console. Excluding a site prevents its links and content from appearing in those features. Neither set of controls is a universal opt-out across every answer engine.

Who should own answer engine optimization inside a marketing team?

Whoever already owns off-site presence, which is often not the person who owns the CMS. The extractability half belongs with content or SEO. The source half looks more like communications work, because it runs on pages you do not control. On the split used here, the risk to watch is two owners and no shared scoreboard, which shows up as each side reporting a different number.

What should a team measure when the answer never links back?

Mentions, the sentiment of those mentions, and which domains the engines cited to produce them. Sessions will undercount, because a reader who got the answer had no reason to visit. Baseline before changing anything. A first measurement taken after the work started proves nothing, and you cannot recover the earlier number later.

Do you need an agency for this, or can an in-house team run it?

An in-house team can run the extractability half immediately, because it is the snippet-era skill they already have. The source half is slower to staff. It needs people credible in communities your brand does not own. If you are evaluating outside help, what to ask before signing covers how those contracts are structured.
