Klarivo vs AthenaHQ: Managed Execution vs Monitoring

Aug 27, 2026 · 8 min read

Two ways to handle how AI describes your brand: measure the description in more detail, or change the sources it comes from. Written for a brand lead who already has a sentiment dashboard.

AthenaHQ is the better buy when a brand team needs the description measured: sentiment, claim accuracy, and board-ready reporting across the eight answer surfaces it names. Klarivo is the better buy once that report exists and somebody has to change the sources it points at.

Every claim below was read from each vendor's own live pages on 20 August 2026. AthenaHQ is named throughout and not linked, which is house policy on competitor links.

AthenaHQ publishes its entry price. Starter runs $295 a month for 3,600 credits, and one credit buys one AI response. A free Essential tier carries 300.

Klarivo publishes no rate card. It prices a programme rather than a seat.

That difference explains most of what follows. One is software you operate. The other is work somebody does.

Key Takeaways

  • The decision is not which dashboard is better. It is whether your next spend measures the description or changes what the models read.
  • AthenaHQ's sentiment layer is real and worth conceding: its plans page lists real-time brand sentiment intelligence on both paid tiers, and its PR panel adds mention alerts and crisis detection.
  • Contrarian: a more precise sentiment score changes nothing by itself. Sentiment can be shaped by the sources and information the model draws on, and no dashboard publishes on a third-party site for you.
  • Coverage favours AthenaHQ: eight named surfaces including Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Copilot, against Klarivo Monitor's five engines.
  • Compare the required configuration, not only the sticker. Starter meters on AI responses, while API access and extra credits are optional paid add-ons.

Verdict: Who Each One Is For

Buyers reach an AthenaHQ alternative search from one of two places. Either the price ladder stopped fitting, or the report arrived and nothing in the answer moved.

Search demand does show that pricing attracts substantially more search interest than reviews or alternatives. Pulled from Ahrefs Keywords Explorer on 20 August 2026, "athenahq pricing" runs 450 global searches a month against 50 for "athenahq review" and 30 for "athenahq alternative". Buyers price this category far more often than they judge it.

Athena AI visibility reporting answers the measurement question well. It tells a brand team how often the models mention them, in what tone, against which rivals, and which sources fed the answer. What it hands back is a diagnosis.

Acting on it means getting independent pages, reviews, and threads to say something different. That is a publishing job, not a reporting one. How models choose what to cite is the mechanism underneath, and it does not run on your own domain.

Buy AthenaHQ if the unmet need is precision: sentiment by market, claim accuracy, a board-ready dashboard. Buy Klarivo if the unmet need is capacity, and nobody has time to be present in the sources every week.

Feature Comparison Table

The last column names which way each row falls rather than leaving you to guess.

Five of eight rows favour AthenaHQ, and the table says so. Coverage, enterprise controls, and market reach are genuine wins for the incumbent. The sections below do not take them back.

Pricing Compared

AthenaHQ pricing is on the page, which is more than most of this category manages. Essential is free and carries 300 credits. Starter runs $295 a month for 3,600 credits, with annual billing taking 17% off. Enterprise is custom.

Read the add-on line before you budget. API access and extra credits sit on top of the Starter price rather than inside it. One inconsistency is worth raising with their sales team: the plans page shows five surfaces on the free tier, while the homepage FAQ says all plans carry eight.

TierPublished priceWhat is includedWhat is metered
EssentialFree300 credits, unlimited membersCredits
Starter$295/month, 17% off annual3,600 credits, eight named surfaces, CSV exportCredits, plus add-ons for API and extra credits
EnterpriseCustomPersona targeting, multi-market, SSO, BI dashboardsNegotiated allocation

A fourth route exists off that page. AthenaHQ runs an Agency partnership tiered by client count, and its August 2026 release notes put ChatGPT Ads reporting on Enterprise and Agency plans. Agencies should ask for that ladder, not the public one.

Do the arithmetic before you commit. A credit buys one AI response, so refreshing one prompt across eight surfaces costs eight credits. On our reading of those published figures, 3,600 credits funds about 450 prompt refreshes a month, or roughly 100 prompts refreshed weekly. A team tracking several sub-brands will hit that ceiling.

Klarivo prices differently, because the deliverable is different. The cost is scoped to the programme, covering tracking and publishing together. That suits a brand team with a budget line. It irritates one who wanted to try something on a card.

Where AthenaHQ Is Genuinely Better

Any honest AthenaHQ review starts here rather than ends here. Three areas are real strengths, all described on AthenaHQ's own pages.

Sentiment Depth

The plans page lists real-time brand sentiment intelligence on both paid tiers. The homepage PR panel adds sentiment analysis, mention alerts, and crisis detection. Enterprise adds claim review and Oracle discrepancy detection, aimed at inaccurate claims rather than unflattering ones. Klarivo Monitor publishes sentiment-trend reporting, while AthenaHQ documents a broader set of sentiment and brand-intelligence capabilities.

Narrative Reporting

AthenaHQ's executive panel names board-ready reporting, competitive intelligence summaries, and ROI tracking. Enterprise adds a dashboard feeding Tableau, Power BI, and Looker. Klarivo publishes no equivalent reporting layer. If the AI channel has to appear inside your BI stack, that is a hard requirement.

Brand-Team Workflows

Governance is built in. Brand voice is enforced, approved sources are required, and nothing ships without a two-step review. Enterprise adds persona targeting and views configured by team or region.

Market reach is larger than the homepage FAQ suggests. That page still says 60-plus countries, while the August 2026 release notes put it at 185 markets with city, state, and province targeting. The Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2, and the FAQ adds GDPR and NIST CSF 2.0 at Tier 3. Klarivo has no published answer to any of it, so when a tracker is genuinely enough is a real conclusion here.

Where Klarivo Is Better

The narrowing sits on one axis, and it is the axis the locked title names. AthenaHQ's Action Center produces drafted assets and outreach emails. Its own page describes the workflow as moving an asset from draft to review.

Somebody on your side still publishes, still handles the reply, and still turns up next week. That is manageable on pages you own. On ground you do not own, the job changes. The community sources shaping how a brand is described are moderated by people with no interest in your quarter. A drafted email does not survive a subreddit rule it never read.

Klarivo sells that half as operated work. Its Reddit page describes a global contributor network working across dozens of subreddits at once. Execution is weekly, every action is human and contextual, and the published outcome line is real commercial outcomes within one to two months.

Monitor closes the loop. Its Top 10 Citation Sources surface names the domains the engines drew on. The source list turns a sentiment reading into a work queue. That is the step a report on its own leaves open.

Engine Coverage Side by Side

AthenaHQ names eight surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Grok. Its Starter tier advertises nine models and names eight, with the ninth covered by "additional models available upon request". Ask which one it is.

Klarivo Monitor names five: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok. Each is tracked independently, on a refresh schedule the client controls.

The gap is Google's answer layer plus Copilot. Suppose your buyers resolve questions inside AI Overviews or AI Mode. That gap decides the comparison. If they use a chat assistant instead, five engines cover the ground, and how engine coverage sets scope matters more than the count.

Switching Notes

Nothing here is portable by default. Decide what you are keeping before you give notice. Starter includes CSV export, so pull your history while the account is live.

The prompt set is worth the most and the one teams forget. A list that took two quarters to tune is not something to rebuild from memory, and building a prompt set worth tracking is slower work than it looks.

What a Brand Team Should Keep in the Handover

  • The prompt set, in full, including the prompts you decided were noise.
  • The sentiment baseline with dates. A score with no date compares to nothing.
  • The source list: which domains the engines cited for your category.
  • Published assets and their live URLs, so you can audit what is still standing.
  • The commercial terms in writing: account ownership, and what happens to published work at exit.

When Klarivo Suits a Brand Team

For a brand lead, handing third-party publishing to an outside team is a brand-safety question first. It is the right one to ask. Klarivo's Reddit page states its position: every action human, contextual, and aligned with community norms, with no automation and no shortcuts. On that account, staying inside subreddit rules is part of the job.

Settle the rest in the contract, not on anyone's word from a web page, ours included. Four things belong in writing before you sign with any provider here: who posts, under which accounts, what affiliation they state, and who owns the assets. A vendor that will not put those down has answered you.

Klarivo suits a brand team that has read the report and agrees with it. What it lacks is capacity. It is the wrong fit for a brand needing city-level reads across 185 markets, for a team whose real requirement is a Looker dashboard, and for anyone hoping to start on a card today.

Worth finding out in week one rather than month four, which is what a scoping conversation is for. Book a Klarivo discovery call. Fifteen minutes, a slot you choose, and instant confirmation, with no form first. The tracking runs in Klarivo Monitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can sentiment in an AI answer realistically change?

Nobody in this category publishes a reliable timeline for sentiment, and we will not invent one. What is published is narrower: Klarivo's Reddit page claims real commercial outcomes within one to two months for community work. Sentiment moves slower than a mention count, because it depends on how much of the old source set still says the old thing. Be suspicious of a vendor who answers this with a number.

Does a negative mention hurt more than no mention at all?

In most B2B categories, no. A negative mention means the model has you in the consideration set and something in the sources is unflattering. That is fixable, and you know where to look. Absence means the model resolves the question without you, with nothing to correct. Regulated categories are the exception, where a wrong claim about a rate or a clinical outcome is a compliance matter.

Who should own this tool internally, brand or SEO?

Split it by what the number is for.

  • Brand owns the metric: sentiment, share of voice, category description.
  • SEO owns the mechanics: crawlability, schema, anything touching the site.
  • PR owns the escalation when a claim is wrong rather than unflattering.
  • One person owns the prompt set, because a list edited by committee stops being comparable.

Can you track sentiment for sub-brands separately?

With AthenaHQ, on the Enterprise tier. Configurable views by persona, team, region, or goal sit above the Starter line, with custom websites and access controls. Klarivo publishes no sub-brand configuration, so raise it in scoping rather than assume it. Either way, sub-brand tracking multiplies your metering.

What happens to sentiment reporting during a rebrand?

The series breaks, and pretending otherwise makes the next four quarters unreadable. A new name has no history in the source set. Early readings measure how well the models have caught up rather than how anyone feels. Track both entities in parallel, annotate the switchover date, and treat the first two months as migration noise.
