AEO Services: What's Included, Costs and How to Measure
Aug 17, 2026 · 7 min read
A month-by-month view of what an AEO engagement delivers, what it costs, and the numbers that tell you whether it's working. Written for the person defending the line item.

AEO services combine research, off-site publishing, and ongoing measurement in a continuous cadence, not a project with a fixed end date. The first month produces research, the second produces published assets, and the third produces the first reading worth showing anyone.
Pricing and category claims below were checked in August 2026.
Key Takeaways
- The calendar is the product: ask any provider for a dated deliverable schedule, and treat a refusal as the answer.
- Month one produces little public-facing activity: baselining and prompt mapping happen before publishing begins, and every credible engagement front-loads that work.
- Leading indicators come first: mentions and citations move months before pipeline does, which is what your ROI model has to be built on.
- Contrarian: if a provider can show you pipeline attribution in month two, they are reporting traffic that would have arrived anyway.
- Volume decay is the real risk: most retainers deliver hard for ninety days and coast after, so put monthly output in the contract.
What Are AEO Services?
Answer engine optimization services get your brand into the sources that AI assistants read when someone asks a buying question, then measure whether the answers changed.
The mechanics are unglamorous. Someone maps the questions your buyers actually ask, finds where those questions get answered today, publishes into those places, and re-runs the same prompts each month. What drives inclusion in an AI answer is mostly third-party evidence, which is why the work happens off your own domain.
What's Included in an AEO Engagement
Four workstreams, running in parallel after the first month.
- Prompt mapping: the buying questions worth tracking, written as buyers phrase them.
- Source-gap analysis: which pages, threads, and reviews the engines cite for your category, and which of them never mention you.
- Off-site publishing: community answers, contributed articles, review presence, and listicle inclusion.
- Measurement: the same prompts, the same engines, the same cadence, with sources named.
A freight and logistics platform we would scope today might run 40 tracked prompts across three engines, with eight to twelve published pieces a month. Smaller category, fewer prompts, same shape.
AEO Deliverables by Month
This is the table to demand from any provider before you sign.
| Month | What arrives | What moves | What to ignore |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Prompt set, baseline reading per engine, source-gap map | Nothing visible | The urge to judge progress |
| 2 | First published assets, community presence established | Early mentions in one engine | Single-engine spikes |
| 3 | Sustained publishing, first comparison against baseline | Mention rate, some citations | Sentiment, still noisy |
| 4–6 | Continued volume, competitive benchmarking | Share of voice against named rivals | Any pipeline claim |
| 7+ | Refresh of decaying assets, prompt-set expansion | Citation rate, then sentiment | Vanity totals with no sources |
The right-hand column is the one people skip. Judging a program on month-two data is the most common way teams cancel something that was working.
How Much Do AEO Services Cost?
Mid-market organic programs run $5,000 to $15,000 per month. Published 2026 pricing research puts the wider category at roughly $1,500 to $5,000 for small-business retainers and $25,000 and above for enterprise programs, so the tiers below describe the middle of the market rather than its edges. Figures checked August 2026.
These are category tiers, not Klarivo's. Klarivo's own floor sits at the top of this table and is stated in the Klarivo section below.
| Tier | Monthly | Typical scope | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | $5,000–7,000 | 20–30 prompts, 6–8 pieces a month, 2 engines | One product, one market |
| Standard | $7,000–12,000 | 40–60 prompts, 8–15 pieces, 3–4 engines | Competitive category |
| Extended | $12,000–15,000+ | 60+ prompts, 15+ pieces, multi-market | Several products or regions |
Publishing volume drives the number. If a quote is flat across tiers on output but rises on "strategy," you are paying for slideware.
What AEO Services Do Not Cover
An AEO service provider controls submission quality and the measurement loop. Four things sit outside that boundary.
Placement guarantees. Moderators can remove posts, and editors can decline contributions. No credible provider can guarantee otherwise.
The wording of an answer. You change the sources. The model writes the sentence.
Underlying product problems. AEO can strengthen an inaccurate or underdeveloped brand narrative, but it cannot erase legitimate, recurring customer complaints. If the same issue appears consistently across review platforms, the problem has to be addressed at its source.
Clean attribution. Assistant referrals arrive with thin referrer data, and any provider promising last-click certainty is describing a dashboard, not reality.
Managed AEO vs DIY vs Software
Buyers comparing AEO solutions are usually choosing between three operating models rather than three vendors.
| Model | Monthly cost | Output capacity | Measurement | Breaks when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Managed service | $5,000–15,000 | 8–20 pieces | Included | Volume decays after onboarding |
| DIY in-house | $8,000–12,000 loaded | 4–10 pieces | Buy separately | The owner gets reassigned |
| Software only | $29–500 | None | Included | Nobody acts on the readings |
Software is the cheapest way to find out you have a problem and the most expensive way to leave it unsolved, because the subscription renews whether or not anyone publishes. Note that the software row understates the top end: enterprise plans in this category quote upward from about $1,000 a month and, at the largest vendors, into five figures a year.
How to Measure AEO ROI
Split the model in two and report both halves separately.
Leading indicators, months 1 to 4. Mention rate, citation rate, share of voice against named rivals, and the source list behind each. These move first and they are the honest evidence that the program functions.
Lagging indicators, months 4 to 9. Assistant referral sessions, branded search volume, self-reported attribution on inbound forms, and pipeline. Tracking AI referrals as their own source has to be configured in month one, or the lagging half of your model has no data behind it.
Add one question to your inbound forms: "Where did you first hear about us?" It is crude, but for this channel, it beats most analytics.
What to Ask an AEO Provider
Teams comparing the best answer engine optimization services usually score the deck. Score the answers to these instead.
- "Show me a dated deliverable calendar." Specific months, specific outputs.
- "How many pieces per month, and who writes them?" Named contributors or an unnamed pool.
- "What does month seven look like?" Post-onboarding volume is where retainers decay.
- "Show me a source list from another client." Redacted is fine. Absent is the answer.
- "What will you refuse to do?" No refusals means no method.
One filter beats the rest. Ask what they would report in month two, knowing pipeline has not moved. A good provider describes leading indicators without flinching.
How Klarivo Runs an AEO Engagement
Klarivo runs the calendar above as one program rather than as two vendors. The publishing side operates community and third-party presence at volume. Klarivo Monitor re-runs your prompt set on a fixed cadence and names the sources behind every movement.
Reporting arrives with sources attached. When mention rate moves, the report shows the domains the engines drew on, which is what makes a month-three number defensible in front of a CFO who has heard the word attribution before.
The tiers above describe the category, not Klarivo. Klarivo is a managed program priced for funded B2B brands budgeting $100K a year or more, and teams under $5M ARR get sent to the DIY AEO playbook rather than into a contract they should not sign.
Categories with almost no third-party discussion to publish into are the other poor fit. Both are worth establishing before a contract rather than in month three.

FAQ
How long does onboarding take before any publishing starts?
Two to four weeks. The prompt set has to be built and a baseline recorded before anything is published, because without the baseline you cannot prove a change later. Providers who start publishing in week one are skipping the measurement setup, which is convenient for them in month six.
Who on our team has to be involved, and how many hours a month?
Expect four to six hours a month from one person after onboarding, mostly reviewing drafts and approving positioning claims. Onboarding itself takes more, usually a day spread across two weeks. If a provider tells you it needs nothing from you, they are planning to write about your product without checking it.
Do we need to change our website for AEO services to work?
Sometimes. Clear information about your category, products, positioning, and pricing can help AI systems understand your brand. But on-site changes alone cannot build the third-party authority that AEO services are designed to strengthen. Published third-party content stays where it is and keeps working. Community accounts are the contested item, since an account with standing took months to build. Get ownership written into the contract before signing, because the default in most agreements is not in your favour.
Do AEO services work outside English-language markets?
Sometimes, and less predictably. Coverage varies by engine and by language, and some assistants answer non-English category questions from noticeably thinner source sets. Ask any provider to show you a baseline in your target language before you buy a plan that assumes it works.
